Why is Comitán the Best Kept Secret?

Comitán de Domínguez is a town that has a particular elegance. It is not as touristy as San Cristóbal, which gives it a more relaxed and authentic atmosphere. It is the city that declared its independence on October 30, 1821, before the Grito de Dolores that Mexico celebrates.

Unlike San Cristóbal, which is saturated with international travelers, Comitán maintains that perfect balance: enough tourism infrastructure to stay comfortably, but with the vitality of a real city where true Chiapans live.

Historic Center: Colonial Architecture in Perfect Condition

The Central Plaza of Comitán is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved in Chiapas. The modernist kiosk occupies the center, surrounded by colonial arcades. The Municipal Palace is an architectural gem from the 17th century. The Cathedral of Santo Domingo rises elegantly with its worked stone facade. The entire plaza breathes a tranquility that you rarely find in mass tourist destinations.

Unlike other colonial centers, Comitán has not been "touristified". Shops are for residents, not travelers. Restaurants serve authentic food at local prices. You can spend hours simply sitting on a plaza bench, drinking coffee, watching real life go by.

El Chiflón Waterfalls: The Bridal Veil

Just 14 kilometers from Comitán (30 minutes by car) are the El Chiflón Waterfalls, one of Mexico's most spectacular natural wonders. El Chiflón is famous for its three main cascades in sequence:

Angel Wing: The first waterfall, smaller but with special charm. Its waters descend in a way that creates the shape of a wing.

Sigh: An intermediate waterfall with clear turquoise waters. Perfect for photography.

Bridal Veil: The main waterfall — a 120-meter drop that is absolutely spectacular. The water descends so delicately that it looks like a bridal veil. There are safe observation platforms at different heights.

Access is paid but economical. There are restaurants with palapas near the water. The water is cool and refreshing — many travelers swim in the lower pools. Bring a swimsuit if you want to take a bath.

Montebello Lakes: 59 Multicolored Lagoons

65 kilometers from Comitán (2 hours by car) is the Lagunas de Montebello National Park, declared a Biosphere Reserve. It is one of Mexico's geological wonders.

The park contains 59 lagoons of different depths and mineral compositions. Colors range from clear turquoise to deep indigo. Some lakes have water so transparent that you can see the bottom 20 meters down. Others are darker and more mysterious.

Features:

  • Free access to several lakes (no cost)
  • Some lakes allow camping and overnight stays
  • Many lakes are safe for swimming
  • Basic services at the park entrance
  • Trekking trails through pine forests
  • Local birds and wildlife are abundant

Recommendation: Go early in the morning to capture the colors at their best (around 8-10 AM the sun is at the perfect angle).

Comitán Cuisine and 2-Day Itineraries

Local Dishes You Must Try:

Chipilín with Ball: A unique regional dish. Chipilín is a green leaf (similar to spinach) that is prepared with a dough "ball" filling. Authentically Chiapan.

Comitán Tascalate: An ancestral beverage made from corn, cacao and spices. Consumed both as a cold drink in heat and hot in winter.

Chiapanese Cheese: The fresh cheese of the region, soft and creamy. Perfect as an appetizer.

Yolk Bread: A sweet local bread that is addictive.

El Comiteco: Agave distillate with its own Denomination of Origin (different from Oaxacan mezcal). Produced only in this region, it has a smoother, more fruity taste. Tastings available at local distilleries.

RECOMMENDED 2-DAY ITINERARY:
